Fallout 76

Fallout 76 is an online action role-playing game in the Fallout series developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. Released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 14, 2018, it is a prequel to previous series games. Fallout 76 is Bethesda Game Studios’s first multiplayer game; players explore the open world, which has been torn apart by nuclear war, with others. Bethesda developed the game using a modified version of its Creation Engine, which allowed the accommodation of multiplayer gameplay and a more detailed game world.

Fallout 76 was released to generally mixed reviews, with criticism for the game’s numerous technical issues, overall design, lack of gameplay purpose, and initial absence of human non-playable characters. The game was the subject of several controversies, chiefly in regards to the quality of physical content. A number of Bethesda’s responses and attempts to provide ongoing support related to Fallout 76 in the months following its launch were also met with criticism. The game sold 1.4 million copies by the end of 2018.

Fallout 76 is Bethesda Game Studios’ first online multiplayer game. Players may play individually or with a party of up to three others. The servers for the game are public dedicated servers, with the player automatically allocated to one of them. While the game was expected to launch with public servers only, game director Todd Howard revealed plans for private servers to be introduced some time after the game’s launch. These private servers allow players to invite friends and to prevent undesirable aspects of player versus player gameplay such as griefing from affecting an individual player’s experience of the game. Howard described the delay as being necessary to allow Bethesda time to assure the stability of public servers. Elements of previous Fallout games are present and are modified to work with the real-time game. The V.A.T.S. system—a mechanic first introduced in Fallout 3 that allows players to pause the game to target specific locations on an enemy’s body to attack—is used in Fallout 76 as a real-time system, though it still allows players to specify targets on an enemy’s body.

The game features an open world four times the size of that of Fallout 4. The game world is called “Appalachia” and is a representation of West Virginia. It features recreations of real locations in the region, including the West Virginia State Capitol, The Greenbrier, Woodburn Circle, New River Gorge Bridge, and Camden Park. The game features numerous new mutated monsters, several of which—such as the Mothman and the Flatwoods monster—were inspired by West Virginian folklore.

The game includes revisions to the SPECIAL progression system. Character attributes fall into one of seven categories: strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. As the player levels up, they are able to spend skill points to boost their attributes on a scale of one to fifteen. Players are able to choose perks, or passive abilities that offer gameplay bonuses. These perks fall into each of the SPECIAL categories and take the form of trading cards. Each card has a value and the player can adopt perks equal to their respective value; for example, if the player has a strength rating of five, then they may equip strength perks worth five points. The player can merge similar cards together to create more powerful—albeit more expensive—perks. The system is designed to encourage the player to recognise the situation they are in and choose perks that aid them rather than passively selecting them and having them for the duration of the game.

Fallout 76 does not feature any human non-player characters (NPCs) as all surviving humans are other players. This required Bethesda to change their approach to storytelling as previous games in the series relied on NPCs to assign quests, engage the player in dialog and advance the overall narrative. Fallout 76 instead uses a combination of NPCs in the form of robots, recordings such as collectible holotapes, terminals throughout the game world, and environmental storytelling where the player uncovers fragments of a narrative by exploring locations that they piece together themselves. Each of these elements had previously been used in the series, often to provide backstory for characters and the world of the game whilst remaining separate from the main narrative. According to Howard, this system allows Bethesda to tell a story whilst giving players a greater ability to create their own narratives. In June 2019, Bethesda announced the game’s first major update, a feature of which introduces human NPCs, however the update was delayed and is scheduled to release in the first quarter of 2020.

The game expands on Fallout 4’s settlements by allowing the player the ability to build bases at many locations of the map. These creations are assigned to the player’s profile and are removed from the game world when the player is offline to prevent progress from being lost. While other players are able to attack player settlements while they are online, the game preserves player creations using “blueprints” to prevent players from having to start over if their creations and progress are destroyed.

Players are able to use nuclear weapons to temporarily change the areas of game world. After acquiring launch codes, the player can access missile silos and fire a missile at almost any point on the map. This irradiates the area, which the player can explore to find rare weapons, gear and items. However, it also attracts powerful enemies and the player needs to be sufficiently strong to survive. The game also includes a photo mode. The player has the ability to pose their character and choose from a variety of facial expressions and filters.

Fallout 76, is the first game in the Fallout series to release a gamemode based around the battle royale genre. This new gamemode, also known as Nuclear Winter, uses many base features of the game, but expands upon them following the modes genre. Players start off in Vault 51, which is set on a timer or until the maximum player count is achieved, which will then prompt an on-screen map to appear where teams can choose where they spawn. Nuclear Winter features parts from the base game such as building using collected blueprints and the ability to launch nuclear payloads via collecting multiple launch codes and a briefcase

Joker

The Joker is a supervillain created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson who first appeared in the debut issue of the comic book Batman (April 25, 1940), published by DC Comics. Credit for the Joker’s creation is disputed; Kane and Robinson claimed responsibility for the Joker’s design while acknowledging Finger’s writing contribution. Although the Joker was planned to be killed off during his initial appearance, he was spared by editorial intervention, allowing the character to endure as the archenemy of the superhero Batman.

In his comic book appearances, the Joker is portrayed as a criminal mastermind. Introduced as a psychopath with a warped, sadistic sense of humor, the character became a goofy prankster in the late 1950s in response to regulation by the Comics Code Authority, before returning to his darker roots during the early 1970s. As Batman’s nemesis, the Joker has been part of the superhero’s defining stories, including the murder of Jason Todd—the second Robin and Batman’s ward—and the paralysis of one of Batman’s allies, Barbara Gordon. The Joker has had various possible origin stories during his decades of appearances. The most common story involves him falling into a tank of chemical waste that bleaches his skin white and turns his hair green and lips bright red; the resulting disfigurement drives him insane. The antithesis of Batman in personality and appearance, the Joker is considered by critics to be his perfect adversary.

The Joker possesses no superhuman abilities, instead using his expertise in chemical engineering to develop poisonous or lethal concoctions and thematic weaponry, including razor-tipped playing cards, deadly joy buzzers, and acid-spraying lapel flowers. The Joker sometimes works with other Gotham City supervillains, such as the Penguin and Two-Face, and groups like the Injustice Gang and Injustice League, but these relationships often collapse due to the Joker’s desire for unbridled chaos. The 1990s introduced a romantic interest for the Joker in his former psychiatrist, Harley Quinn, who becomes his villainous sidekick. Although his primary obsession is Batman, the Joker has also fought other heroes, including Superman and Wonder Woman.

One of the most iconic characters in popular culture, the Joker has been listed among the greatest comic book villains and fictional characters ever created. The character’s popularity has seen him appear on a variety of merchandise, such as clothing and collectible items, inspire real-world structures (such as theme park attractions), and be referenced in a number of media. The Joker has been adapted to serve as Batman’s adversary in live-action, animated, and video game incarnations, including the 1960s Batman television series played by Cesar Romero and in films by Jack Nicholson in Batman (1989) and by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (2008). The character was adapted into his own standalone film, Joker, in 2019 starring Joaquin Phoenix in the role. Mark Hamill, Troy Baker, and others have provided the character’s

The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a 2015 action role-playing game developed and published by CD Projekt and based on The Witcher series of fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. It is the sequel to the 2011 game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, played in an open world with a third-person perspective. Players control protagonist Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter (known as a witcher) who is looking for his missing adopted daughter on the run from the Wild Hunt, an otherworldly force determined to capture her and use her powers. Players battle the game’s many dangers with weapons and magic, interact with non-player characters, and complete main-story and side quests to acquire experience points and gold, which are used to increase Geralt’s abilities and purchase equipment. Its central story has several endings, determined by the player’s choices at certain points in the game.

Development began in 2011 and lasted for three and a half years. Voice recording took more than two and a half years. The writing was infused with realistic aspects such as moral ambiguity in an attempt to avoid simplification, impart authenticity, and reflect Sapkowski’s novels. Central and Northern European cultures formed the basis of the game’s world. REDengine 3 enabled the developer to create a complex story without compromising the game’s open world. The music was composed by Marcin Przybyłowicz and performed by the Brandenburg State Orchestra.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in May 2015, with a Nintendo Switch version released in October 2019. The game received critical acclaim, with praise for its gameplay, narrative, world design, combat, and visuals, although it received minor criticism due to technical issues. It received numerous Game of the Year awards and has been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. It was also a commercial success, shipping more than 20 million copies by June 2019. Two expansions were also released to critical acclaim: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. A Game of the Year edition was released in August 2016, with the base game, expansions, and all downloadable content.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red, an internal studio of publisher CD Projekt, that is releasing for Google Stadia, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 16 April 2020. Adapted from the Cyberpunk franchise, it takes place in dystopian Night City, an open world with six distinct regions. Players assume the role of the customisable mercenary V in a first-person perspective, with skills in hacking and machinery, an arsenal of ranged weapons, and options for melee combat.

Cyberpunk 2077 is developed using the REDengine 4 game engine. They launched a new division in Wrocław and partnered with Digital Scapes to assist production. Around 500 total staff members are involved with the development, exceeding the number that worked on the studio’s previous game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith consulted on the project, with actor Keanu Reeves having a starring role.

Cyberpunk 2077 is played in a first-person perspective as V, a mercenary whose voice, face, hairstyles, body type, body modifications, background, and clothing are customisable. V’s clothing alters how interactions fare with non-player characters (NPCs), with whom they have the potential to form romantic and sexual relationships. Stat categories—Body, Intelligence, Reflexes, Technical, and Cool—are malleable depending on the character classes that players assume, which are NetRunner (hacking), Techie (machinery), and Solo (combat). The perk tree is branched into melee, blades, handguns, shotguns, rifles, sniper rifles, hacking, two-handed combat, assassination, “cold blood”, engineering, and athletics. V must consult a “ripperdoc” to upgrade and purchase cyberware implants; black markets offer military-grade abilities. The rarity of any given equipment is shown by a coloured tier system. V can take cover, aim, run on the ground and walls, jump, double jump, and slide. With arm blades, V may climb walls and, like with other close-combat weapons, deal melee strikes. There are three types of ranged weapons—Power (standard), Tech (which penetrate walls and enemies), and Smart (with homing bullets). These can be customised and modified. Ranged weapons are equipped to ricochet bullets in a target’s direction and slow them down in bullet time. Four types of damage can be inflicted and resisted—Physical, Thermal, EMP, and Chemical. Weapon use increases accuracy and reloading speed, which are manifested in character animations. Gunsmiths repair and upgrade weapons. The game can be completed without taking a life, with nonlethal options for weapons and cyberware.

The open world metropolis Night City, California consists of six regions—the corporate City Center, immigrant-inhabited Watson, luxurious Westbrook, suburban Heywood, gang-infested Pacifica, and industrial Santo Domingo. Night City’s surrounding area, the Badlands, can also be explored. V navigates these locations on foot and in vehicles, which are customisable and subject to either a first or third-person view. Autonomous cars allow V to focus on combat instead of driving while engaging in gunplay. Pedestrians can be run over by vehicles. Radio stations are available to listen to.The full day-night cycle and dynamic weather affect the way NPCs behave. V can buy apartments—in which to fetch weapons, get dressed, use a computer, and bring back NPCs for sexual activity—and garages. The game features non-English-speaking characters; players who do not speak the languages can buy translator implants to better comprehend them. “Braindance”, a digital recording device streamed directly into the brain, allows V to experience the emotions and muscle movements of another person. Branching dialogues enable interaction with NPCs and actions in quests. Experience points are obtained from main quests and fuel the stats, while side quests yield “street cred” and unlock skills, vendors, places, and additional quests.Quests are acquired from characters known as Fixers. Throughout the game, V is aided by various companions. Consumables, like soft drinks, are used for healing, and objects can be inspected in V’s inventory. Minigames include hacking, boxing, auto racing, martial arts, and shooting ranges. “Game over” messages only appear at the point of death; if a quest is failed, the game moves on all the same. Player choice leads to different endings.

Terraria

Terraria is an action-adventure sandbox game developed by Re-Logic. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows on May 16, 2011, and has since been released for other PC, consoles, handhelds, and mobile platform. Terraria features exploration, crafting, building, and combat with a variety of creatures in a procedurally generated 2D world. Terraria received generally positive critical reception upon release and praise given to its sandbox elements. By May 2019, the game had sold over 27 million copies across all platforms.

An in-game screenshot of Terraria, circa 2011
Terraria is a 2D sandbox game with gameplay that revolves around exploration, building, crafting, combat, and mining. The game has a 3D sprite tile-based graphical style reminiscent of the 16-bit sprites found on the Super NES. The game is noted for its classic exploration-adventure style of gameplay, similar to games such as the Metroid series and Minecraft.

The game starts in a procedurally generated world. The player starts out with three basic tools: a pickaxe for digging, a sword for combat, and an axe for woodcutting. Many resources, notably ores, can be found while exploring caves. The player begins with 100 health and 20 mana points, which can both be increased by finding certain items. Some resources, and most items, may only be found in certain areas of the map, stored in common and rare containers, or dropped by certain enemies. The player uses resources to craft new items and equipment at an appropriate crafting station for that recipe. For example, tables or other items can be crafted at a work bench, bars can be smelted from ore at a furnace, and armor can be crafted at an anvil. Several advanced items in Terraria require multiple crafting operations where the product of one recipe is used as an ingredient for another.

The player can encounter many different enemies in Terraria, such as simple slime blobs, zombies, skeletons, flying eyes, and various biome-specific enemies. The occurrence of certain enemies depends on several factors including time, location, random events, and player interactions. The player can fight against enemies with swords, bows, guns, magic spells, and summoned attackers. The player may also battle bosses with a number of different combat mechanics that can drop rare items and large amounts of in-game currency. All bosses can be summoned by using certain items or randomly when certain criteria are met. Some of the bosses can spawn naturally in certain places and times. The defeat of these bosses is directly tied to in-game progression.

By completing specific goals, such as defeating a boss or obtaining a certain item, players can attract non-player characters (NPCs) to occupy structures or rooms they have built, such as a merchant, nurse, or wizard. Some NPCs can be acquired by finding them throughout the world and will then reside in the player’s house like the wizard or the mechanic. Players may then buy or sell items and certain services from NPCs with coins found in the world. These coins include copper, silver, gold, platinum. The game includes a currency system in the form of coins that can be primarily used to complete transactions with NPCs.

The game recognizes many different biomes and areas, defined by the blocks that exist in the vicinity, each home to a unique set of enemies. Some biomes, such as the Corruption or Crimson biomes, will naturally expand by slowly overtaking and converting blocks in adjacent biomes. If the player journeys to the Underworld biome and summons and defeats a boss called the Wall of Flesh, the game enters “hardmode”, which adds many new and much stronger enemies throughout the world, as well as new NPCs, bosses, ores, items, and a new biome called The Hallow.

The game also features an “expert” difficulty, which can be enabled when creating a world. Expert mode increases the difficulty of the game by increasing the attack and health of monsters and bosses, further increasing the strength of weaker enemies after hardmode, giving some bosses new attack patterns, decreasing the effectiveness of life regeneration, and other tweaks. To deal with the higher attack damages of expert mode the defense statistic is more effective than it is in the normal difficulty. In addition to the higher difficulty level, expert mode increases the chance for enemies to drop rare items, and adds new items that can only be obtained by defeating the bosses on expert mode.

The game also supports multiplayer. In addition to standard gameplay, Terraria has a modding community

The Forest

The Forest is a survival video game developed and published by Canadian video game developer Endnight Games. The game takes place on a remote, heavily forested peninsula where the player character Eric Leblanc and his son Timmy are survivors of a plane crash. The game features nonlinear gameplay in an open world environment played from a first-person perspective, with no set missions or quests, empowering the player to make their own decisions for survival. Following a three-year long early access beta phase, the game was released for Microsoft Windows in April 2018, as well as for the PlayStation 4 in November 2018. The game was also a commercial success, selling over five million copies by the end of 2018.

In The Forest, the player must survive on a forested peninsula after a plane crash, where they must survive by creating shelter, weapons, and other survival tools. Inhabiting the island, along with various woodland creatures, are a tribe of nocturnal, cannibalistic mutants, who dwell in villages on the surface and in deep caves beneath the peninsula. While they are not necessarily always hostile to the player, their usual behavior is aggressive, especially during the night.

However, the developers wanted players to question whether the island’s cannibalistic tribe is the enemy of the player, or vice versa. For example, when first encountering the player, the cannibals may hesitate to attack and instead observe the player from a distance, attempt to communicate with the player through effigies, and send patrols around the player’s base camp. In combat, they regularly attempt to protect one another from injury, remove torches, surround the player, hide behind cover, drag wounded tribesmen to safety, keep their distance, use tactical decisions, not overextend into unknown territory, and occasionally surrender out of fear. They are also afraid of fire, and will sometimes refrain from approaching the player if there is a campfire or torch nearby. Though there are no set missions, there is an optional conclusion to the game.

As the player progresses through the game, and explores the caves underneath the forest surface, they will encounter increasingly bizarre mutations, including deformed babies and mutants with several extra appendages. The game also features a day and night cycle, with the player able to build a shelter and traps, hunt animals and collect supplies during the day, and defend themselves against the mutants by night.

Dead By Daylight

Dead by Daylight is an asymmetric survival horror game developed by Behaviour Interactive. Dead by Daylight was released for Microsoft Windows in June 2016, released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June 2017, released on Nintendo Switch on September 24, 2019, scheduled for release on iOS and Android before November 2019. The game is played as a one versus four online multiplayer where one player takes on the role of the savage killer, and the other four players play as survivors, trying to escape the killer and avoid being caught and sacrificed to the Entity.

Alongside a handful of original characters, the game also includes downloadable (DLC) characters from horror franchises such as Halloween, Left 4 Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Saw, Evil Dead, Scream, and Stranger Things.

As of January 1, 2016, Behaviour Interactive became the game’s publisher, acquiring publishing rights from Starbreeze Studios.

The player repairing a generator with other Survivors
A group of up to four survivors must elude one killer. The survivors’ perspectives are third-person, while the killer’s perspective is first-person. The survivors cannot fight against the killer and can only survive by running away and evading them. They must use obstacles in the form of wooden pallets, windows, and items that they either find inside chests or bring before the match starts to run from the killer for as long as they can. In order to escape, survivors must repair 5 generators scattered across the entire map to power the exit gates, then they must open the exit gates and leave the area themselves or find a hatch to jump into.

Players assume the role of one of the 20 survivors: Dwight Fairfield, Meg Thomas, Claudette Morel, Jake Park, Nea Karlsson, Laurie Strode, William ‘Bill’ Overbeck, Ace Visconti, Feng Min, David King,Quentin Smith, David Tapp, Kate Denson, Adam Francis, Jeffrey ‘Jeff’ Johansen, Jane Romero, Ashley ‘Ash’ Williams, Steve Harrington, Nancy Wheeler, or Yui Kimura. The goal of the survivors is to escape the enclosed area, which can be done in one of two ways: either by repairing five disabled generators to provide power to the switch boxes of two exit gates leading out of the trial grounds; or by escaping through the hatch. The hatch opens only when there is only one survivor remaining in the trial. The survivors will need a key to open the hatch if there is more than one person alive. If the killer closes the hatch before the survivor reaches it the Endgame Collapse will initiate, giving the survivor only two minutes to open one of the exit gates before the timer runs out or if they are caught by the killer. The survivors’ movement options consist of sprinting, walking, crouch-walking, or crawling. They must elude the killer by losing their line of sight in a chase or by successfully hiding from them.

Hunt Showdown

Hunt: Showdown is a first-person shooter survival horror video game published by Crytek. The game is set in the late 1890s, and details the hunters who take down various monsters that have since overrun the world. The game was originally in development at Crytek USA, who wished to create a spiritual successor to Darksiders—a video game series developed by their predecessor, Vigil Games—under the title Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age. After the initial announcement in June 2014, Crytek USA was shut down due to financial issues, and the development was brought to the Crytek headquarters. The game, under the new title Hunt: Showdown, was re-announced in May 2017. Hunt: Showdown was launched on Steam in early access on February 22, 2018, and for Xbox Game Preview on May 29, 2019. The full release of the game launched on August 27, 2019 for Microsoft Windows and will be released on Xbox One on September 19, 2019 with a PlayStation 4 release planned for later in 2019.

Vigil Games, known for the Darksiders series, was shut down by THQ in 2013 as part of the publisher’s bankruptcy. While Crytek’s founder Cevat Yerli had expressed an interest in bidding for the Austin-based studio based on their work on Darksiders alone (and because Crytek was already planning to establish a US subsidiary in the city), he did not feel that their products fit with the company’s business strategy. However, immediately after Vigil was closed, Yerli brought Vigil head David Adams on board to lead the new studio, Crytek USA, citing Adams’ leadership skills. In turn, Crytek USA would hire many former employees from Vigil. It was originally stated that the new studio would focus on developing new projects rather than pursue regaining the rights to its former properties; the studio did attempt to re-gain the rights to Darksiders — but they were instead acquired by Nordic Games.

Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age was announced in June 2014 as Crytek USA’s first game. Hunt was designed to be a co-operative game; Adams recalled having been frequently asked about the possibility of adding co-op to a future instalment of Darksiders, and stated that “one of the first things we said when we got here was, we are absolutely doing a four-player co-op game. That wasn’t even up for discussion.” The game will be set in the late-19th century, and feature weapons and classes reminiscent of the era. In response to comparisons to The Order: 1886, another 19th-century third-person gothic action horror game that was unveiled at E3, Adams contended that there were few similarities between the games, noting their focus on co-op and arguing that the portrayal of the era in The Hunt was more “authentic”, unlike that of The Order, which he felt was the “BioShock version” of the era. Players will be able to customise their characters with different skills and outfits; Adams said that “if you want to make Sherlock Holmes or a gunslinger from the Old West, or a witch hunter from Eastern Europe, you have the costume choices, you have the weapon choices, you have the skill choices.”

Hunt will also carry “a lot of the DNA” of the Darksiders series; Adams noted that Hunt would incorporate “old school elements” of its genre in new ways (much like Darksiders, which cited The Legend of Zelda as influence), and feature a large number of distinct creatures and bosses as enemies in contrast to “typical” shooting games, which, in Adam’s opinion, only tended to have “maybe a dozen” different enemies. He acknowledged that his staff had experience from Darksiders in designing large numbers of distinct enemy types—Adams alone designed 18 of the bosses in Darksiders II. Hunt will also utilise procedurally generated maps and objectives, so that no two missions will be alike. Hunt will be built atop CryEngine; Adams remarked that the transition from the custom engine developed for Darksiders to CryEngine made the former look inferior.

On July 30, 2014, Crytek announced that as part of a restructuring, development of Hunt would be shifted to Crytek, and Crytek USA would cease to operate as a studio-only as a provider of US-based support for CryEngine licensees. Kotaku reported that much of the studio’s staff, including David Adams, had left the company in response to late wage payments by Crytek. Similar issues had been experienced by Crytek UK, which was shut down the same day with the sale of the Homefront franchise to Koch Media.

On May 16, 2017, Crytek released a teaser on YouTube announcing the game is still in production with a brand new name ‘Hunt: Showdown’. On October 12, 2017, Crytek revealed via IGN First that the game will have an Early Access release on Steam. A closed alpha test on PC that started January 31 was announced on January 22, 2018.The closed alpha concluded on February 22 with the release of early access the same day. Hunt was released for Xbox Game Preview on May 29, 2019.
